Mignon Van Der Merwe and Izel Cilliers give the ultimate underdogs Free State 2 wins against the highly favoured Titans


Former Proteas women captain Mignon van der Merwe scored an unbeaten 110 to ensure Recon Tactical Free State women chased down 264, a target that was set by Fidelity Titans women.


The Titans batted first and had 3 batters score half centuries in captain Robyn Searle (67), Katherine Prior (85), and Amogelang Maphulunga (65*). Amogelang scored her unbeaten 65 at a strike rate of 151 with 7 fours and 2 sixers. The Titans finished their innings with a strong score of 263 for 5 at Mangaung Oval.




The home side had two significant partnerships that included Mignon. Izel Cilliers scored 47 to lay a foundation for Free State. Teenager Elandri van Janse Rensburg scored an attacking unbeaten half century to help Free State win their first 50 match against the Titans this season. Elandri (52) was striking at 108, and her veteran partner Mignon was also going at a good strike rate of 105.


Titans only managed to take 6 wickets with Ricea Coetzer taking 3, Gandhi Jafta took 2, and Monalisa Legodi took just 1.


On Sunday, Free State did a double on the Titans through winning by 5 wickets. Titans batted first and posted 137/7 in their 20 overs. Titans skipper Robyn top scored with 47, and Katherine scored a 21 ball 37.


The promising partnership between Katherine and Robyn was broken by Zintle Kula. Zintle had 3 dismissals to her name, and Mampe Ntsane took 2 wickets, including that of Robyn.


Yolandi Potgieter (22) and Verunissa Reddy (20*) started with the bat. The real MVP for the Free State batting lineup was Izel, who scored 58. Free State reached the target with just 1 over to spare. Titans bowlers only managed 5 wickets with 2 for Paulinaj Mashishi and Nicoelin Janse van Rensburg. Tiani van der Heuvel took the other wicket. Paulinah is now the leading wickettaker in the CSA T20 competition.


Titans’ next match is against WSB Western Province women in Cape Town on the weekend of 6 April, and Free State next match is against Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers in Oudtshoornon on the weekend of 13 April.
