Jemma Botha becomes the cherry on top as WP finished an all most perfect T20 campaign

On a chilly Sunday morning, Fidelity Titans ladies captain Robyn Searle won the toss and decided to be positive and bat first.

World Sport Betting Western Province had only made one change from their Saturday lineup with Caitlin Wyngaard coming in for Christine Tomilson. Titans had made two changes with Tiani van der Heuvel and Josephine Masangwane coming in for Lesedi Madisha and Christelle van der Schyff.

Titans opened the batting with Robyn and Katherine Prior. The pair made 24 before Katherine became the first victim of Jemma Botha. Tebogo Macheke came in and looked positive, but unfortunately, her partnership with Robyn did not last as Robyn was dismissed for 23 by debutant Rifqah Esau.

Nosipho Vezi took the wicket of Tebogo Macheke again as she went for a 15 ball 21. Amogelang Maphungula also looked good with her attacking 15 ball 21, but unfortunately, she got a good yorker from Caitlin.

Paulinah Mashishi (17) and Kay-Leigh Tapp (17) were the other batters to reach double figures, and the Titans ladies ended up posting 117.

With Faye Tunnicliffe, the tournament’s leading run scorer unavailable for WP, Babette de Leede, and Jemma opened the batting again. While Babette found ease in batting on Sunday, Jemma struggled to get going. Jemma was dropped in 2 occasions early in her innings by Robyn and Nicolien Janse van Rensburg.

The opening pair soldiered on to put a good opening stand of 61. Babette was bowled by the tournament’s joint leading wickettaker Paulinah for a well played 21 ball 30. Saraah Smith came in and continued the good work for WP with Jemma.

The 16 year old, Jemma would go on and score her first T20 half century for WP. She was finally dismissed for 54 runs with only 1 run to victory. In her 54 runs of 41 balls, she scored 7 fours and 1 six.

Kelsey Adams (1*) and Saraah (26*) took WP to their eighth victory in 10 matches with only 1 loss and 1 no result match. There were still 32 balls remaining when WP reached their target.

It has been a dominant campaign by WP with the coaching staff of Claire Terblanche and Vuyani Parafini being at the forefront. It’s another season for WP with at least 1 of the 2 trophies that provincial women’s cricket competes for under Cricket South Africa.
