Dolphins win first One Day Cup in 15 years, and Free State gets an important win

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins women side have brought silverware to the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastal union after holding out DP World Lions from winning their encounter. The win comes 15 years from the last time they won the competition.

The Dolphins were inserted by the Lions to bat. The Durbanites opened their batting with Alexandra Candler and Courtney Gounden.

Courtney was trapped LBW by Lehlohonolo Meso for 1 in the seventh over. The Dolphins found themselves on 16 for 1. Asamkele Kawu (28) and Alexandra put on a second wicket partnership of 50. The Dolphins number 3 was caught at mid-on for a well played 28 by Jenna Evans of the bowling of Relebongile Mkhize.

Zintle Mali (18) and Seshnie Naidu (25) batted well to give Alexandra support. The Dolphins opening batter anchored the innings well for a well played 89 of 142 balls.

The Dolphins would go on and post 200 for 7 in their 50 overs. That total set the Lions the task of needing to get the target in 40 or fewer overs if they were to spoil the day for the Dolphins. The task was not a tall mountain to climb as the Lions had to score at 5 runs an over in 40 overs.

Inform batter, Nonkululeko Thabethe had a short stay as she was bowled by Jade de Figueredo for 10. The Lions were 13 for 1, and Madisson Landsman quickly followed Nonkululeko as the Lions found themselves in trouble at 19 for 2.

Palesa Mapoo tried to play similar innings as Alexandra by being the anchor, but she batted really slow as she struggled to rotate strike. Palesa would score 26 runs of 66 balls before she was dismissed by Jade.

While Kirstie Thomson, Sunette Viljoen-Louw, and Jenna had decent contributions. The star of the Lions batting was captain Kgomotso Rapoo, who scored a 53 ball 60. Unfortunately, her heroics were not enough for the Lions to push for a win. The Lions were eventually bowled out for 175, with 46 balls remaining.

The Dolphins would go on and win the match by 25 runs. With Angelique Taai, the Dolphins coach winning the One Day Cup meaning both domestic trophies have been won by women head coaches.

In Oudstoorn, where Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers are taking on Recon Tactical Free State. The visiting side won very crucial points, including a bonus point as they won by 4 wickets.

The homeside won the toss and decided to bat first. It seemed to be a bad call to bat first as Tabitha la Grange was dismissed without scoring by Elendra Janse van Rensburg.

Mieke de Ridder and Asakhe Nyovane soon followed as the Badgers were 23 for 3, all thanks to Elandra.

The homeside never found their feet in the match even with valuable contributions from Julia Hoal (17), Miceala Andrews (35), and Chantal van Schoor (23). The Badgers were bowled out for 133 with Yolandi Potgieter, skipper Zintle Mali, and Miane Smit, all taking 2 wickets each.

The visitors insured that they won’t be relegated this season. Chasing this win was crucial for their success next season, as the points for this season and next season will be combined to find out which team will be relegated.

Opening bowlers Miceala and Jane Winster were very economical, but they did not find success. Khayakazi Mathe would be the bowler that gets the wickets of both the openers Yolandi (14) and Izel Cilliers (12). Zintle Kula was run out for 25 by Chantal.

Julandi Saayman took the other 3 wickets of Mignon van der Merwe (33), Verunissa Reddy (24), and Evodia Yekile (3).

The City of Roses based side was taken to victory by teenagers Miane (15*) and Elandra (1*) with 4 wickets remaining. Free State would end up finishing the match in 37.
